Employees who are police officers are referred to as sworn employees, because they swear an oath to serve the people by maintaining public order and enforcing the law.

The Department also has civilian employees who perform functions such as parking enforcement, animal complaints, maintaining criminal records and statistics, managing evidence, administrative support work and equipping Department personnel.

Sworn Officer Rank Structure

Policing involves a chain-of-command, with sworn officers of higher rank giving direction to those working under them as follows

  • Chief of Police
  • Deputy Chief
  • Lieutenant
  • Sergeant
  • Officers and Detectives
