Balance Your Bottom Line Hero

Create Space

Lactation rooms are a private space (other than a bathroom) that can be used to express milk. Businesses are not required to have specific rooms designated only for pumping, however it is encouraged.

Businesses with a large number of female employees between the ages of 18 and 45 have found a permanent space dedicated as a milk expression room is the most cost-effective and efficient option.

These spaces can be as small as 4 feet by 5 feet. A lock on the door can help create privacy and an electrical outlet is important to run a breast pump.

Smaller businesses may have other solutions for space dedicated to milk expression.

Finding Balance for Your Company & Employees

Becoming an Infant Friendly Workplace is easier than businesses think. Many businesses already have the pieces in place ready to do it.

Create Space

Create Space

A small, private space can be set up for a lactation room. A mother needs to express milk approximately every three hours to maintain a healthy milk supply. Milk can be refrigerated or stored in a personal cooler or small refrigerator.

Crafting Policy

Craft Your Policy

Supporting breastfeeding through policy is an important part of being Infant Friendly. Policies should include guidelines for breaks, space, a water source and what is provided for breast milk storage. This also includes some effort to inform and educate employees and mangers about the policy. View the Crafting Policy information for further details.
