Lateral Transfer

The Fargo Fire Department offers a lateral transfer hiring option for full-time firefighters currently employed by another first-responder agency. Apply today on The City of Fargo careers page.

Prerequisites

To apply for a Lateral Transfer firefighter position, applicants must have:

  • Minimum of 2 years paid, full-time experience as a firefighter (within the last 12 months)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • The following certifications:
    • EMT Certification
    • AHA Basic Life Support Health Care Provider
    • Firefighter I & II
    • Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations

Hiring Process

After an applicant meets the prerequisites, the testing process includes:

  • An interview
  • A physical agility test

If the applicant passes these first steps, the applicant can expect to complete:

  • A background investigation
  • A pre-employment drug screening
  • A psychological examination
  • A polygraph examination
  • An eye examination
  • A medical examination

Failure of any portion of the testing process or conditional employment process above disqualifies the applicant. The applicant will then be eligible for hire as a new firefighter and would complete the Fargo Fire Department’s training academy.

Candidates offered a position will be required to complete a 2-week orientation period and serve a one-year probation period. During the probation period, lateral firefighters must successfully complete the Apparatus Driver Operator Pumper certification.
