Lateral Transfer
The Fargo Fire Department offers a lateral transfer hiring option for full-time firefighters currently employed by another first-responder agency. Apply today on The City of Fargo careers page.
Prerequisites
To apply for a Lateral Transfer firefighter position, applicants must have:
- Minimum of 2 years paid, full-time experience as a firefighter (within the last 12 months)
- Valid driver’s license
- The following certifications:
- EMT Certification
- AHA Basic Life Support Health Care Provider
- Firefighter I & II
- Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
Hiring Process
After an applicant meets the prerequisites, the testing process includes:
- An interview
- A physical agility test
If the applicant passes these first steps, the applicant can expect to complete:
- A background investigation
- A pre-employment drug screening
- A psychological examination
- A polygraph examination
- An eye examination
- A medical examination
Failure of any portion of the testing process or conditional employment process above disqualifies the applicant. The applicant will then be eligible for hire as a new firefighter and would complete the Fargo Fire Department’s training academy.
Candidates offered a position will be required to complete a 2-week orientation period and serve a one-year probation period. During the probation period, lateral firefighters must successfully complete the Apparatus Driver Operator Pumper certification.
