Special Election on Change in Form of Government

The City of Fargo will hold a Special Election on October 6, 2026 regarding a Change in Form of Government.

Note: The 2026 Special Election is unique in that it is administered by the City of Fargo (rather than Cass County) due to the proximity to the November General Election.

    Main entrance - take the elevator/escalator to 2nd floor meeting rooms
  • Atonement Lutheran Church - 4601 University Drive South

Voter Information

To participate in a City of Fargo election, you must be a city resident for at least 30 days prior to the election. You must also be at least 18 years old, a North Dakota resident and a citizen of the United States.

There is no formal voter registration process in North Dakota. To vote, simply go to one of the polling locations listed above and present an accepted form of identification.

Absentee Voting

Absentee voting is available for the City of Fargo Special Election.
City of Fargo Special Election Absentee Application

Any qualified voter of the Fargo is eligible to vote absentee in any county-wide election. A resident may apply for an absentee ballot at any time during the calendar year. Please keep in mind that this application is only valid for the calendar year in which you apply.

  • There is NOT an early voting poll location. You must submit an absentee application to request a ballot be mailed to you. Absentee ballots will become available 40 days before the election.

An application for an absentee ballot may be obtained at the county finance office, can be downloaded and printed off this website, or you can go to the Secretary of State's website and use the Absentee Ballot Application Wizard. In advance of the City of Fargo Special Election, only, the City of Fargo Auditor’s Office is also providing applications for an absentee ballot.

Fargo residents may return their completed absentee ballot application to the City of Fargo Auditor’s Office:

  • Secure Dropbox Outside Fargo City Hall: 225 4th Street North, Fargo - The blue dropbox is located on the western side of the building. Please put the absentee ballot application into an envelope labeled "Auditor's Office" and provide your name and contact details on the envelope before submitting it into the drop box.

Voted absentee ballots must be received by the City of Fargo Auditor’s Office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day (Tuesday, October 6, 2026). Voted ballots can be mailed to City of Fargo Auditor's Office, PO BOX 2471, Fargo, ND 58108 or placed in the secure dropbox outside City Hall at 225 4th Street North, Fargo. Instructions for voting by mail can be found here.

  • Note: you MAY NOT return your voted absentee ballot to a polling location.
