The annual meeting of the City Board of Equalization will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 7:30 a.m. in City Commission Chambers in City Hall at 225 4th St. N.
The City Commission meets annually as the Board of Equalization to equalize the property tax valuations in Fargo. This process includes giving property owners the opportunity to appear before the Board regarding their property values. Those who feel their property value for tax purposes is inaccurate may present their case to the Board at this meeting.
In North Dakota, the standard of value for assessment purposes is market value; this is generally considered what most properties would sell for in a normal market transaction. Annually, The City of Fargo’s total assessment valuations must be adjusted to fall within 90% to 100% of what properties are selling for in order to comply with North Dakota law and State Board of Equalization requirements. The City of Fargo accomplishes this through statistical analysis, reappraisal and value adjustments. Property owners can look up their assessment valuation at FargoParcels.com.
If anyone wishes to appear before the City Board of Equalization, it is recommended that they notify the Fargo Assessor’s Office at 701.241.1340 or online at FargoND.gov/Assessor prior to the April 9 meeting. Before the Board takes any action on a property owner’s appeal, it will likely refer those who fail to make initial contact back to the Assessor’s Office.
After April 9, property owners will be unable to seek an appeal of their 2024 valuation through The City of Fargo. However, they can file an appeal with the Cass County Board of Equalization, which meets in June.
The City Board of Equalization meeting on April 9 will be available live on The City of Fargo’s social media channels, TVFargo.com and a live broadcast on the Fargo Access Channel 56.
