During Monday night’s City Commission meeting, we recognized the winners of the City of Fargo’s 2026 Mayor for a Day essay contest. Third-grade student Laila Wangen of Kennedy Elementary School and seventh-grade student Aubrie Myrmoe of Fargo Public Schools’ Self-Directed Academy were selected by Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney for their creativity, thoughtfulness and strong writing.
Earlier in the day, both students met Mayor Mahoney alongside their families and toured City Hall, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how local government operates. During the Fargo City Commission meeting, they had the opportunity to read their winning essays, sharing their ideas for Fargo’s future.
Fargo's Mayor for a Day contest invites students across Fargo Public Schools to reflect on leadership, community and the role they can play in shaping the city.
The City of Fargo congratulates Laila and Aubrie for their outstanding work and thanks all students who participated in this year’s contest.
