Native American Commission - March 7, 2024 Minutes
The Regular Meeting of the Board of Native American Commissioners of the City of Fargo, North Dakota, was held in the Commission Chambers at City Hall at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, March 7, 2024.
The Native American Commissioners present or absent were as follows:
Present: Ashley Littlewolf, Emily Sargent (via conference call), Dale Sayers, Suzanne Senske
Absent: Whitney Johnson, Lisa Ducheneaux, Amanda Strauss
Also Present: City Commissioner John Strand, Fargo School Board Liaison Seth Holden
Item 1. Welcome and Introductions
Vice Chair Littlewolf welcomed Members to the meeting and introductions were made.
Item 2. Approve Order of Agenda & Minutes
Member Sayers moved the Order of Agenda and the minutes of the January 4, 2024 Native American Commission meeting be approved. Second by Member Senske. All Members present voted aye and the motion was declared carried.
Item 3: Public Comment
No public comment was provided.
Item 4: Indigenous Association Report
Member Sargent provided an update on the Indigenous Association. She noted the following upcoming events:
Regular open craft nights on Thursdays 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be no open craft night March 7.
A Seed Exchange will be held April 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A “How to Start a Business” seminar will be held April 6 and 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Further information can be found on the Indigenous Association Facebook page.
Item 5. Subcommittee Reports
Member Senske provided an update from the Education Subcommittee sharing that one position had been filled with the Indian Education program and two more will be coming available.
No updates were provided from the Health and Wellness Subcommittee.
Member Littlewolf provided and update from the Housing Subcommittee that the community conversation held two weeks ago on ending homelessness went well with great events and conversation. She shared that she participated in a panel that was held at the Fargo Theatre in the evening.
Item 6. Staff Reports
Director of Planning and Development Nicole Crutchfield provided an update on the Savannah’s Day Resolution and noted updated wording would come before the full Board at an upcoming meeting. She additionally noted that the James Mathy visit on ending homelessness went well as Member Littlewolf previously shared and stated a recap has been requested regarding the event.
Ms. Crutchfield shared that a Fair Housing and Evictions event will be held on April 11 at the Fargo Theatre at 6:30 p.m.
Item 7. Announcements
Member Senske shared that Native American artifacts were discovered near the Valley City area. She suggested more public information be shared so residents know what to do when artifacts that are found.
