HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES

Regular Meeting: Thursday, March 21, 2024

The Regular Meeting of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Fargo, North Dakota, was held in the Commission Chambers at City Hall at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, March 21, 2024.

The Human Rights Commissioners present or absent were as follows:

Present: Carolyn Becraft, Kristen Nelson, Tambah Saah, Xavier Welty, Nancy Boyle, Sekou Sirleaf

Absent: Aaron Kawreh, Cody Severson, Ritchell Aboah, Zoe Absy, Cheryl Schaefle,

Item 1. Welcome and Introductions
Vice Chair Sirleaf welcomed Members to the meeting and introductions were made.

Item 2. Approve Order of Agenda
Member vice chair Sirleaf moved the Order of Agenda to be approved. All Members present voted aye and the motion was declared carried.

Item 3. Approve Order of Minutes

Member vice chair Sirleaf moved the Order of February Minutes be approved as presented, second by member Becraft. All Members present voted aye and the motion was declared carried.

Item 4. Cease-Fire Resolution Discussion
Member Welty read HRC member prepared a cease-fire resolution to end the Israel-Hamas war.

Member Nelson moved HRC to adopt the Cease-fire resolution and forward the resolution and supporting documents to Fargo Board of City Commission, second by member Boyle. All Members present voted aye and the motion was declared carried.

Item 5. Homeless Coalition presentation, by John Campbell
Campbell provided highlights of the 2023 State of the Homelessness report. Report states that ‘on any given night, there are 1,052 individuals estimated to be experiencing homelessness in the F-M metro are.

Item 6. Urban Selection, presentation by Martin Korpue
Korpue provided highlight of Urban Selection, a new sneakers store in the F-M metro, offering cultural experience.

No Staff updates.

Item 8. Announcements/ Committee Updates
Member Becarft provided updates of the sub-committee. High Plains Fair Housing will be hosting event with panels to discuss, evictions & fair housing rights on Thursday April 11th.
Member Boyle provided update on upcoming 14th Annual Human Rights Summit & Arc of Justice Awards on Saturday April 13th.
Member Nelson provided update on Trans visibility day. Nelson encourage all to participate by updating the social media profile picture to Trans flag.

Item 9. Public Comment
Community member Barry Nelson thanked HRC member for their support in the cease-fire resolution. Nelson gave updates on upcoming community events in the metro area.
Community member Schuler express needed community support on Trans Day of Visibility.
