HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES
Regular Meeting: Thursday, July 18, 2024
The Regular Meeting of the Human Rights Commission of the City of Fargo, North Dakota, was held in the Commission Chambers at City Hall at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2024.
The Human Rights Commissioners present or absent were as follows:
Present: Cody Severson, Aaron Kawreh, Carolyn Becraft, Kristen Nelson, Ritchell Aboah, Zoe Absy, Xavier Welty, Tambah Saah
Absent: Nancy Boyle, Sekou Sirleaf
Item 1. Welcome and Introductions
Chair Severson welcomed Members to the meeting and introductions were made.
Item 2. Approve Order of Agenda
Member Nelson moved the Order of Agenda to be approved. All Members present voted aye and the motion was declared carried.
Item 3. Approve Order of Minutes
Member Nelson moved the Order of April and May Minutes be approved as presented, second by member Absy. All Members present voted aye and the motion was declared carried.
Item 4. YMCA Summer Meals program, presentation by Katie Andersen.
Katie Andersen food program Director at the YMCA provided an overview of the food program the YMCA provides to the community. Programs includes providing nutritious meals and snack to youth, adults and senior citizens.
Item 5. Fargo Housing & Redevelopment Authority, presentation by Chris Brungardt.
Chris Brungardt provided an overview of Fargo Housing and Redevelopment Authority (FHRA). Brungardt stated part of the mission of FHRA is to provide safe housing and affordable homes to lower and moderate incomes communities. FHRA provides access to permanent housing through several government subsidized programs. FHRA has 204 units of public housing, 248 affordable housing and 2036 Section 8 voucher and associated programs.
Item 6. Staff Updates
Staff liaison Shiil provided updates from the Fargo Fire Department.
Recently the FFD partnered with Community Health Alliance. This partnership helps to connect community members that the Fargo Fire Department responds to, who need additional assistance, with care and resources to live a more comfortable life when it comes to their health and well-being.
On July 8, the Fargo Fire Department had 11 new employees begin the Fargo/West Fargo Joint Fire Academy. Upon successful completion of the recruit academy, the City’s 11 new firefighters will move to shift.
Item 7. Announcements
Chair Severson gave brief informational protocol on how to conduct sub-committee meeting to ensure open law meeting requirements are met by all members.
Board liaison Commissioner Strand congratulated member Absy on her successful election to the Fargo Park Board.
Item 8. Public Comment
Community member Victoria Johnson provided information on an upcoming back to school event, hosted by Families United for Self-Empowerment on August 15, 4-7p at Jefferson Elementary.
