WHEREAS, Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disabilities globally, affecting all demographics; and
WHEREAS, More than 1.5 million Americans carry a Fragile X mutation, placing them at risk for associated disorders, and more than 100,000 Americans have FXS; and
WHEREAS, Despite easy DNA testing, FXS often goes undiagnosed due to its recent discovery and limited awareness, even among medical professionals; and
WHEREAS, Focused research offers the potential for effective treatments and a cure for FXS; and
WHEREAS, Fragile X research remains significantly underfunded despite the disorder's prevalence, cure potential, treatment benefits and relevance to related conditions; and
WHEREAS, FXS serves as a valuable research model for neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, as well as conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; and
WHEREAS, Increased public and medical awareness of Fragile X will empower informed medical decisions for carriers and aid individuals with FXS in societal adaptation and contribute to understanding autism and related conditions.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dr. Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of Fargo, North Dakota do hereby proclaim July 22, 2025 to be
