On Tuesday, December 3, three Fargo Firefighters and a Fargo Police Sergeant were honored with a national award for their heroic conduct during the critical incident on July 14, 2023. Fire Capt. Everett Patterson, Firefighter Erich Christlieb, Firefighter Justin Phillippi and Police Sgt. Zach Robinson received the Shepherd Award presented during the Active Shooter Integrated Response Conference in San Marcos, Texas. The award recognizes first responders who go above and beyond to protect their community through exceptional public service.

On July 14, 2023, a gunman ambushed first responders at a crash scene in Fargo, killing Fargo Police Officer Jake R. Wallin and wounding two additional officers and a bystander. As Sgt. Robinson neutralized the threat, Capt. Patterson and Firefighters Christlieb and Phillippi rushed to aid the wounded as the gunfire continued.

“Our members of the Fargo Fire Department, along with Sgt. Robinson, demonstrated the greatest form of heroism in risking their own lives to save the lives of others. All four showed the highest level of dedication to serving their community and ensuring public safety. Their courageous actions and leadership set an outstanding example for all,” stated Fire Chief Steve Dirksen.

Capt. Patterson and Firefighters Christlieb and Phillippi attended the Active Shooter Integrated Response Conference; Sgt. Robinson was unable to attend. The conference is hosted by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University. It is the only national conference that bridges law enforcement, fire and EMS responses to active shooter and attack events. ALERRT’s goal is to provide research-based active shooter response training that saves lives and protects communities.
