Tobacco Users Encouraged to Quit During ‘The Great American SmokeOut’

Fargo Cass Public Health invites tobacco users to learn about local and state quitting resources for the Great American SmokeOut

11/20/2024 11:00 a.m.

Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH) is encouraging smokers and users of vaping devices to set the Great American SmokeOut, tomorrow, November 21, as their quit date. Quitting commercial tobacco and nicotine is one of the best steps for improving your health, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases like COPD, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Every year, around 1,000 North Dakotans die from commercial tobacco use.

“Quit on November 21, and even Thanksgiving dinner will taste better,” said Doreen Odera, FCPH Community Health Educator. "We’re ready to support your journey toward a healthier you. Our Break Away from Nicotine program is tailored to each individual and customized to fit their needs. We’re here to help you take that first step."

With an adult smoking rate of 13.4%, North Dakota exceeds the national average of 12.1%, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. North Dakotans can join thousands nationwide as part of the American Cancer Society’s Great American SmokeOut.

With support from FCPH, healthcare providers, pharmacists and NDQuits, individuals can receive tailored quit plans and gain access to a wealth of tools and resources to increase their chances of success. Services include personal coaching and access to medications to improve the rate of success. NDQuits and the FCPH Break Away from Nicotine (BAN) program provide free nicotine replacement therapy to participants who qualify.
