Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH) is encouraging tobacco users to set a quit date during Quit Week, which takes place June 9 – 15. For the fifth consecutive year, partners from Tobacco Free North Dakota, North Dakota Health and Human Services and local public health units are coming together to empower individuals to make a plan to stop using cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, or electronic nicotine devices (vapes).
"One of the healthiest and most empowering decisions you can make is to start your journey to being tobacco-free,” said Doreen Odera, Community Health Educator with FCPH. “Our Break Away from Nicotine (BAN) program is tailored to each individual and customized to fit their needs. We’re here to help you take that first step."
With support from healthcare providers, pharmacists, NDQuits, and FCPH, individuals can receive tailored quit plans and gain access to a wealth of tools and resources to bolster their chances of success. Services include personal coaching and access to medications to improve the rate of success. NDQuits and the FCPH BAN program provide free nicotine replacement therapy to participants who qualify.
In addition to highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco and nicotine dependence, including various cancers, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses such as COPD, Quit Week serves as a crucial opportunity for individuals to prioritize their well-being.
Despite strides in reducing tobacco use rates, 15% of adults in North Dakota continue to smoke, contributing to 1,000 deaths annually and approximately $379 million in healthcare costs, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. However, with the collective efforts of local public health units, Tobacco Free North Dakota, and NDQuits, progress is being made to combat tobacco-related challenges in the state.
