Metro Area Residents Urged to Properly Connect Sump Pumps as Heavy Rain Continues

Connecting a sump line to the sanitary sewer system in the spring and summer can overload the system

05/24/2024

As the metro area continues to experience heavy rain, the Regional Water Reclamation Facility is urging residents in Fargo, West Fargo, Horace and surrounding communities to ensure their sump pump lines are properly connected for the spring and summer.

Connecting a sump line to the sanitary sewer system in the spring and summer can quickly overload the sanitary sewer system, especially during times of heavy rain. Excessive water in the sanitary sewer system can cause sewer back-ups, resulting in possible property damage.

Between March 31 and October 1, residential sump pumps must drain into the storm sewer system either via a direct connection to a main storm sewer line, directly on the ground 20 or more feet away from the resident’s home or through a buried line to the curb. Prior to diverting sump pump discharge outside, residents are urged to ensure the discharge line is not plugged.

Residents with questions about sump pump connections should contact the Regional Water Reclamation Facility at 701.241.1454.
