FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA – Over the past four years, The City of Fargo has been operating a tree nursery just north of the downtown Main Library. The tree farm consists of a total of about 75 saplings, including elm, maple and ginkgo. "The nursery was put in place as a temporary location so that when the time was right the trees could be relocated within the Fargo community," said Fargo City Forester Scott Liudahl.
On Wednesday, October 11, at approximately 8:30 a.m., crews will be moving approximately 30 of the trees (elms and maples) to new locations where they will have ample space to continue to grow. Most of the trees will be replanted across the civic green space between the Main Library and Fargo City Hall, while other trees will have new homes along the sides of City Hall. With the help of a contractor, crews will utilize a skid-steer loader with a tree-spade attachment to move the trees, ensuring their roots remain intact.
The Forestry Division is moving the small, healthy trees prior to the cold weather that accompanies winter. The young trees will be staked, mulched and watered to help them thrive in their new locations. Liudahl expects additional trees will be relocated in 2024.
