Mayoral Proclamation - Vern Bennett Day - October 7, 2019

I, Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, North Dakota,do hereby proclaim October 7, 2019 as Vern Bennett Day

  • WHEREAS, Vern Bennett served as Superintendent of Schools in Fargo for 28 years, retiring in 1999; and

  • WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the Fargo School District experienced strong growth including new elementary and junior high schools, new district offices and additions to North and South high schools; and

  • WHEREAS, Vern played a crucial role in launching the Trollwood Performing Arts School in 1978, a program of Fargo Public Schools;

  • WHEREAS, Bennett Elementary School was built in South Fargo and named in his honor and opened in 2000; and

  • WHEREAS, Vern was first elected to the Cass County Commission in 2002 where he continued to serve until the time of his death; and

  • WHEREAS,Vern was recently named a member of the Fargo Dome Authority and was also an alternate member of the Metro Area Diversion Authority Board; and

  • WHEREAS, Vern Bennett passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2019.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That Dr. Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim Monday, October 7, 2019 to be

Vern Bennett Day

in the Cities of Fargo, North Dakota.
