In response to the recent confirmation of emerald ash borer (EAB) in January 2026, the City of Fargo’s Forestry Division will continue aggressive diversification efforts, primarily in neighborhoods with a higher percentage of ash trees along streets. The strategic removal and replacement of ash trees with a variety of non-ash species increases the resilience of Fargo’s urban canopy against EAB.
The emerald ash borer is a wood-boring insect originally from Asia. It was first found in the U.S. in 2002 and has since spread to 37 states, killing hundreds of millions of ash trees.
Fargo residents who have ash trees (preferably two or more) on the boulevard next to their property are encouraged to call the Forestry Division at 701.241.1465 to request the removal and replacement of these trees. This service will be completed free of charge.
Other considerations for homeowners:
• Consider removing low-value ash from your property and plant species other than ash. Removal cost increases with decline.
• Consider treating large, healthy high-value ash. Application by a certified applicator may be necessary and will need to be done by a tree-care professional. The City of Fargo website has a list of contractors that offer this service.
• EAB spreads slowly on its own but can be moved long distances via firewood. Always buy firewood from local sources.
