Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH) is inviting community members to attend walk-in flu shot clinics in October. The first ‘Flu Shot Friday’ event will take place on October 17, from noon to 4 p.m. The second will take place on Friday, October 31, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Flu shots will be provided on a walk-in basis for anyone age 6 months and older. High-dose vaccine will be available for individuals 65 years and older. The walk-in clinics will take place in the Oak Room at the main FCPH building, located at 1240 25th Street South, Fargo.
Receiving an annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce flu-related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. Cheryl Wavrin, FCPH Immunization Coordinator, says, “Getting the flu vaccine can reduce the severity of illness, lessen possible days of missed school and work and help to prevent the spread of the flu. We’re especially encouraging those who are 65 years and older, children under 5 years old, pregnant women and those with chronic medical conditions like heart disease and diabetes to get vaccinated.”
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anyone can get the flu, but certain individuals are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. CDC estimates that flu has resulted in 9.3 million – 41 million illnesses, 120,000 – 710,000 hospitalizations and 6,300 – 52,000 deaths annually between 2010 and 2024.
