Contractors for the City of Fargo will be closing a short section of Main Avenue from Friday, November 17 through Sunday, November 19, to perform an emergency sewer repair west of University Drive. Traffic will begin to be detoured from Main Avenue before rush hour traffic on Friday. The closure of Main Avenue is less than one block in length between University Drive and 14th Street S.

On Monday, November 20, Main Avenue will re-open with one lane of traffic in each direction for the next week. Motorists can expect delays and crews working close to traffic once the roadway opens with reduced lanes.

Business access from Main Avenue will be allowed off University Drive for the driveways that don’t have alternative side street access between University Drive and 14th Street S.

Detour routes will be marked separately for car and truck routes through the area as:

CAR ROUTE:

  • Eastbound Main Avenue: 15th Street S to 1st Avenue S to 11th Street S to Main Avenue
  • Westbound Main Avenue: University to 1st Avenue S to 15th Street S to Main Avenue

TRUCK ROUTE:

  • Eastbound Main Avenue - 25th Street S to 1st Avenue N to University to Main
  • Westbound Main Avenue: same as cars; University to 1st Avenue S to 15th Street S to Main Avenue

“The emergency closure is needed to fix a section of our sewer system we’ve been monitoring, and the time has come to fix it before it continues to deteriorate further,” said Jeremy Gorden, Transportation Division Engineer for City of Fargo. “Drivers have probably noticed a large dip in the inside lanes of Main Avenue right around this spot. To prevent further damage to both the road and the sewer system, we’re getting into this spot now to fix for the safety of our drivers and property owners who rely on that sewer system.”

Flaggers will be utilized whenever necessary to keep traffic moving safely and freely throughout the active work zone.
