Project: 4th Street S/Main Avenue Reconstruction

Since mid-June, City of Fargo contractors have been working on a large full roadway reconstruction and water main improvement project at 4th Street South area around Island Park. By Monday morning, October 23, crews will be opening 4th Street S roadway and business driveways off 4th Street between 1st Avenue S to Main Avenue to motorists.

The intersection of 4th Street S and 1st Avenue S will also open to all directions of traffic. The new multi-use pedestrian path through Island Park is now open. This path connects the area to the City of Fargo trail system.

Crews will continue to be working through the area on directional and street signing and completing the installation of street lighting over the next few weeks. This work is not anticipated to impact traffic.

The pavement through this stretch of 4th Street S between Main Avenue and 2nd Street S was over 25-years-old. The infrastructure improvement project not only repaired the roadway conditions, it also improved pedestrian facilities, added bike lanes, replaced aging streetlights with new LED street lights on 4th Street S, and installed a new force main and replaced an existing force main, water main and sanitary sewer main.

The new force main that has been installed is part of the city-wide improvements being completed from the downtown area to the provide relief to the Broadway sanitary sewer inceptor to increase capacity across the area.

Contractors for the neighboring roadway and infrastructure improvement project on 7th Street S anticipate two more weeks of work to wrap up the project. Starting next week, crews will start the final paving operations for 7th Street S between the intersection of 1st Avenue S and just south of 2nd Street S.

Local resident and business access off 7th Street S will continue to be accessible via cross streets south of this and 8th Street S.
