Zone: Downtown
Project: 4th Street S/Main Avenue Reconstruction

The intersection of 4th Street S and 2nd Street S has reopened to all directions of traffic except north of the intersection. Traffic through the intersection is maintained as an all-way stop for the next three weeks while crews continue to work on the new traffic signals.

City of Fargo contractors working on the 4th Street S roadway reconstruction and water improvement project have moved into the third phase of the project and started on the last section of 4th Street S roadway removals.

Starting next week crews will move into the fourth phase of the project and begin work in the median area on Main Avenue between 2nd Street S to 4th Street S to continue installation of the new force main. On Main Avenue, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with traffic control starting east of the 2nd Street and Main Avenue intersection, and east of Broadway in this stretch. Business driveways off Main Avenue between 2nd Street to 4th Street will change to right-in and right-out only.

Through the work zone, current area business or destinations access is via:

  • OPEN: 4th Street S and 2nd Street S intersection
    * YMCA east parking lot driveway reopened off of 4th Street S, and the temporary gravel access point is no longer in use
    * Business driveway and residential driveway for High Rise building off of 2nd Street S is accessible via 4th Street S or Main Avenue

The section of roadway or intersections currently not accessible to traffic or local traffic only:

  • CLOSED: 4th Street S and 1st Avenue S intersection
    * Business driveways off of 4th Street S between 1st Avenue S to Main Avenue via Main Avenue driveways

As part of this project, crews have almost completed the new multi-use pedestrian path through Island Park. This path will connect surrounding City of Fargo trail system together.

At the end of July, a neighboring roadway and infrastructure improvement project began on 7th Street S to replace the deteriorating stretch of roadway and existing cast iron water main that is over 76 years old. This week, crews pushed north on the project and the active work zone is on 7th Street S between 5th Avenue S through the intersection of 3rd Avenue S to just south of 2nd Avenue S.

Local resident and business access off 7th Street S will be accessible via 8th Street S and cross streets through the area.

Speeds are reduced to 25 mph through both work zones. Please slow down and watch for trucks entering and exiting the work area.

The project work should be complete by late fall for the 4th Street S and 7th Street S. reconstruction and water main replacements.
