Fargo Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney has released the following statement:

Last Friday’s events were a tragedy for the entire Fargo community and our region. A young man’s family is grieving an immeasurable loss of a cherished family member. My heart goes out to Gary, Ryan and the entire Netterville family as they grieve Shane’s passing.

I want our community to also remember Fargo Police Officer Adam O’Brien and his family are coping with this traumatic event and the lasting impact it will have not only on their family, but also the Netterville family.

I invited Shane’s brothers to meet this morning at Fargo City Hall with North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley, ND Deputy Attorney General Claire Ness, Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski, Fargo Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Dr. Terry Hogan and me to engage in an open dialogue regarding the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) review of the use of force related to the July 8 critical event.

Shane’s family has inquired about the release of video from the event and the timeline for the investigation. I wanted to ensure they were provided the opportunity to ask questions directly to the Attorney General, whose team is leading the investigation. Today was an important first step and we look forward to future meaningful and sincere communications in the days and weeks ahead.

We are all looking for answers – including the Fargo Police Department, the Fargo City Commission and me as your Mayor. The investigation into the events of July 8 is the top priority for every one of us. Once the BCI investigation is complete, we are committed to releasing the records from the incident in full transparency.

Fargo is a place where all are welcome; this is a community where we perpetually strive to improve ways to foster continuous dialogue among everyone.
