Community members are invited to help plant native trees and shrubs along the Red River during the annual Reforest the Red event on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from noon to 6:30 p.m. at 3650 River Drive South in Fargo. No previous planting experience is required to volunteer. Short training sessions will be provided throughout the event.
Reforest the Red is a community effort focused on restoring and improving the health of the Red River corridor. Planting trees, shrubs and other native vegetation can help stabilize riverbanks, reduce erosion, improve water quality, provide habitat for wildlife and create shade along the river.
Community members are encouraged to bring friends, family members or coworkers to volunteer. For safety, one adult is requested for every five youth in eighth grade or younger.
Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear closed-toe, flat shoes, long pants and gloves that can get muddy. Planting activities may include digging holes, planting trees and shrubs, mulching, watering and staking plants. To volunteer, email Kimberly@RiverKeepers.org or call 701.356.8915. Reforest the Red is coordinated by River Keepers, in partnership with the City of Fargo, Fargo Park District and Cass County Soil Conservation District.
