The Cass and Clay Counties Suicide Prevention Coalition will host two community events to give residents practical tools they can use to recognize warning signs, have conversations with people who may be struggling and make homes safer. Both events are free and require no registration.
The first event is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main parking lot of Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH) at 1240 25th St. S., Fargo. This event will be held alongside the FCPH Food Truck Event, giving community members an opportunity to enjoy lunch while learning simple steps they can take to support suicide prevention.
The second event will be a Lethal Means Panel Discussion on Thursday, September 24, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Clay County Law Enforcement Center, 911 11th St. N., Moorhead. Lethal means safety focuses on reducing access to items that could be used to harm oneself during a crisis.
The events are being held in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month, which takes place throughout the month of September, but suicide prevention is a year-round effort.
“We know that putting time and space between a suicidal person and lethal means can save lives,” stated Abby Lange, FCPH Health Promotion Director. “These events will give families and community members practical tools they can use to create safer environments and support someone who may be struggling.”
Community members are encouraged to attend either event to find out how they can play a role in preventing suicide and supporting mental health conversations. Attendees will learn practical steps, including how to:
• Recognize warning signs that someone may be struggling or at risk
• Start a conversation when they are concerned about someone
• Safely store and dispose of medications
• Use firearm trigger locks (free locks will be provided at both events)
• Create a safety plan
