Effective Tuesday, November 11, MATBUS will begin to offer free rides to all veterans, regardless of disability status. Since 2009, the public transit system’s fare policy has included free rides for service-connected veterans, a status given to those injured during their military service. Riders showed their eligibility for the free rides by presenting a veteran ID with the “service-connected” designation.
Now, any veteran can ride free on MATBUS fixed routes when they show their veteran ID, and no further verification will be required. This free fare will continue year-round. The change has been welcomed as a way to further support all who served in the United States military. It will also reduce any potential confusion that could occur onboard the bus when only select veterans were included in the policy.
Please note that MATBUS administrative offices will be closed on Veterans Day.
