WHEREAS, Families are a priority in the City of Fargo, and supporting them includes ensuring access to environments that promote healthy lifestyles and informed infant feeding choices; and
WHEREAS, Human milk feeding, commonly known as breastfeeding, is the optimal source of infant nutrition and a proven public health strategy that supports lifelong health and development; and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding offers significant benefits to both infants and mothers, including lower rates of childhood obesity, diabetes, and infections, as well as reduced risk of maternal breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension; and
WHEREAS, All major medical authorities recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, with continued feeding alongside complementary foods for two years and beyond, as mutually desired; and
WHEREAS, Families are more likely to achieve their breastfeeding goals when supported by healthcare providers, childcare centers, employers, and community systems through best practices and lactation-friendly environments; and
WHEREAS, A breastfeeding-friendly community embraces families of all races, ethnicities, and family structures, and works to eliminate barriers to human milk feeding through education, policy, and cultural support.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Dr. Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of Fargo, do hereby proclaim August to be
NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH and August 1-7, 2025 as WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK
in The City of Fargo, we urge everyone to prioritizes supporting families by promoting healthy lifestyles and informed infant feeding choices, emphasizing the significant benefits of human milk feeding for both infants and mothers, and advocating for community-wide support to help families achieve their breastfeeding goals.
