Believe in Us | INSIDE OUT - Temporary Fargo Installation
Dan Koeck

Installed in 2022, “Believe in Us | INSIDE OUT” transformed Madison Elementary into a striking symbol of identity and connection. Featuring 130 large-scale portraits of students and staff, the installation turned the school’s exterior into a temporary but powerful tribute to belonging and pride.
The project was led by Fargo-based photographer Dan Koeck who has volunteered at Madison Elementary for over 15 years. Supported by The City of Fargo’s 2022 public art initiative, the installation was developed in collaboration with the global Inside Out Project—an international platform that helps communities turn personal identity into public art.
From concept to completion, the effort was grounded in partnership. Dan worked closely with Madison’s students, staff and leadership as well as City officials and local volunteers. Together they ensured the school’s unique spirit was at the center of the project.
While the portraits have since come down, the impact remains. “Believe in Us | INSIDE OUT” was more than an art installation—it was a celebration of community led by those who know it best. It showcased what’s possible when public art reflects the people it’s made for.
