Forestry Department

The Fargo Forestry Department manages a growing inventory of over 60,000 trees found on City right-of-way. Trees are removed for health and disease reasons and the department continually adds specimens to the urban forest. The department also makes sure requirements for tree establishment in new developments, per Land Development Code, are met and conduct tree maintenance in other parts of town. Additionally, street trees are routinely pruned to help better fit in the urban environment.

The Forestry Department's mission is to promote and maintain a safe, healthy and continuously progressive urban forest to benefit all residents.

Note: It is highly recommend that firewood not be moved in or out of the City as this poses a risk to other trees.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)

After receiving lab results from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture officials confirmed Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was found within Moorhead city limits.

Emerald ash borer is a wood boring insect originally from Asia which was first found in the U.S. in 2002. It has since spread to 36 states and killed hundreds of millions of ash trees. Emerald ash borer adults do not fly more than a mile or two on their own; however, they can be moved long distances through the movement of firewood and ash nursery stock.

Fargo residents who have an ash tree on the boulevard adjacent to their property are encouraged to call the Forestry Department to request the removal and replacement of these trees. Residents who have concern for a tree on private property can request an evaluation by the Forestry Department as well. For either of these requests, call 701.241.1465, or fill out the above, on-line Inspection Request Form.

For more information about emerald ash borer, what to look for in ash trees and possible treatments, please visit the ND Department of Agriculture.
