The Mayor's Message - 09.20.2021

With the increase in hospitalizations and positive cases of COVID-19 in the community, it is more important than ever to take precautions to stay healthy. Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and is potentially fatal. Getting the flu shot can keep you from getting seriously sick with flu and can reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization. Check with your healthcare provider or local pharmacy to ask about flu vaccine.

As part of the One Book, One Community event series, a panel discussion titled “American Indian Boarding Schools and the Doctrine of Discovery” will be held September 28th at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Library. Featured panelists are Joseph McNeil, Karen Van Fossan and Hollie Mackey who will discuss how federal policy and religious doctrine have served to advance religion as an expression of free market capitalism at the expense of Indigenous communities in the United States. The Library’s outdoor StoryWalks have been updated for fall. The StoryWalk outside of the Downtown Library features the book “A Fall Ball for All” by Jamie A. Swenson and the Brunsdale Park StoryWalk features the book “Grumpy Monkey” by Suzanne Lang. The Library is hosting an educational exhibition of posters through September 30th that recount the events of September 11, 2001, through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. The exhibit includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s permanent collection.
