Mayoral Proclamation - Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month - March 2020

I, Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim March 2020 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

  • WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States among men and women combined and there is currently no cure; and

  • WHEREAS, One in 22 men and one in 24 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetimes; and

  • WHEREAS, There are now more than one million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States; and

  • WHEREAS, Approximately 33% of eligible North Dakotans 50 to 75 years of age and older are not up to date with colorectal cancer screening; and

  • WHEREAS, An estimated 384 North Dakotans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year and 130 will die from this disease; and

  • WHEREAS, If the majority of people in the United States age 50 or older were screened regularly for colorectal cancer, half of all cases could be prevented entirely; and

  • WHEREAS, It is critical that all people, of all ages, know the signs and symptoms of the disease; and

  • WHEREAS, Observing Colorectal Cancer Awareness during the month of March provides a special opportunity to offer education on the importance of early detection and screening.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Dr. Tim Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim March 2020 as:

COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

in the City of Fargo, North Dakota.
