Mayoral Proclamation - Larry Sing ALS Heroes Day - August 26, 2019

WHEREAS, ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease as it is commonly known, is a disease with no effective treatments or cures which has a life expectancy of 2-5 years after diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease as it is commonly known, is a disease with no effective treatments or cures which has a life expectancy of 2-5 years after diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, Roughly 16,000 Americans are living with ALS at any given time; and

WHEREAS, Veterans are more than two times more likely to develop ALS for reasons unknown; and

WHEREAS, $2 billion is the estimated cost to develop a drug to slow the progression of ALS and $250,000 is the estimated out-of-pocket cost for caring for a person with ALS; and

WHEREAS, Fargo/Moorhead recognizes the impact that ALS has on families and communities in the region and the ripple effect of that impact on the workforce and local economy; and

WHEREAS, Fargo/Moorhead has come together for 25 years in support of individuals and families to raise funding and awareness for ALS via the Larry Sing Memorial ALS Golf Classic, raising more than $1.8 Million.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That I, Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim August 26, 2019 as

LARRY SING ALS HEROES DAY

in the City of Fargo, North Dakota and encourage our citizens to donate generously to organizations like the ALS Association in support of research into treatments and a cure, as well as durable medical equipment, speech generating devices and respite care for those in need in our community.
