Mayoral Proclamation - Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month - 11.01.2016

We, Del Rae Williams, Mayor of Moorhead; and Time Mahoney, Mayor of Fargo, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2016 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

  • WHEREAS, in 2016, an estimated 48,950 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and 40,560 will die from the disease; and pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, and is the only major cancer with a five-year relative survival reate in the single digits at just seven percent;

  • WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is late stage, and 72 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis while 93 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years; and

  • WHEREAS, approximately 90 deaths will occur in North Dakota and 660 deaths will occur in Minnesota in 2016; and the indigence and death rate for pancreatic cancer are increasing and pancreatic cancer is anticipated to move from the fourth to the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. by 2020; and

  • WHEREAS, the Federal Government invests significantly less money in pancreatic research than it does in any other leading cancer killers; and pancreatic research constitutes only two percent of the National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding, a figure too low given the severity of the disease, its mortality rate, and how little is known about how to arrest it; and

  • WHEREAS, the Fargo/Moorhead Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Group is an organization giving a voice to the individuals and families impacted by pancreatic cancer in the community through faith-based activities, awareness events and education, advocacy, and patient and family support; and

  • WHEREAS, the health and well-being of residents in our communities are enhanced as a result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early detection, causes, and treatments.

  • NOW, THEREFORE, WE, Del Rae Williams, Mayor of Moorhead; and Time Mahoney, Mayor of Fargo, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2016 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in our cities and urge all citizens to talk to their loved ones about pancreatic cancer.

  • IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we have set our hands and caused the Official Seals of the City of Moorhead, State of Minnesota; and City of Fargo, State of North Dakota, to be affixed this 1st day of November, 2016.
