I, Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of Fargo and Del Rae Williams, Mayor of Moorhead do hereby proclaim February, 2015, to be Home Matters Month.

02/01/2015

  • WHEREAS, In March 2013, the Home Matters movement put a spotlight on homelessness and American’s quality of life, connecting home life with education, health/well-being, safe and nurturing environments, community services and public spaces. These variables help create a foundation for a stronger America; and

  • WHEREAS, More than half a million people in the United States do not have a home. Since 2000, homelessness in the Fargo/Moorhead community has been on the rise. On a daily basis just over 700 people are homeless in Fargo/Moorhead, seventeen percent of them being children; and

  • WHEREAS, Research has shown that when people have access to healthcare and have connections and support for their families, they have a better chance to be able to get back on their feet to rebuild a better quality of life; and

  • WHEREAS, We need to redefine Home and create the New American Dream. We need to change the way people think about where they live. Home is not just about the four walls around us, it is about the environment that affects the choices we make in life and who we become.

Having February become Home Matters Month will help focus our community on issues of home and the homeless in our community. To help change the nation for the better and the stronger, we need to focus on our home area first; Fargo/Moorhead.

  • IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seals of the Cities of Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota to be affixed this 1st day of February, 2015.
