River Keepers @ the Library - 2023

Volunteer and help out with the River Keepers! Learn about the River Keepers, what they do, and how to get involved. Then head outside for a hands-on service project. Volunteers will enjoy an outdoor walk and pick up trash near the Red River. Pre-registration is required for this all-ages program. Registration opens June 13. We're getting wild at the Library! Jesse Simonson, outdoor skills instructor, will be showing tweens ages 10 to 15 how to survive in the great outdoors using the same skills as the characters from many of our favorite books. We'll learn how to make a survival shelter like Brian in Hatchet, set a survival trap like Katniss from The Hunger Games, tie Buck's #1 Call of the Wild rescue knot, and so much more. Author Visit with Christopher Vondracek "Dancing with Welk: Music, Memory, and Prairie Troubadours"

Lawrence Welk was a young accordionist and bandleader from Strasburg, ND who struck stardom in the midcentury, catapulting from the middle of nowhere to national fame through his unique music style and long-running television show. Dancing with Welk tracks Vondracek and his band The Brickhouse Boys’ attempts to follow in Welk’s footsteps some fifty years later, reaching beyond the horizons of Vermillion, SD toward the spotlight.

Vondracek’s book blends memoir, travelogue, and cultural history to create a nuanced and often hilarious ode to the landscapes and musical traditions of the Northern Great Plains.

Reading Therapy pets are available on the second Saturday of each month (through April) to listen to children practice their reading in a relaxed, informal setting. Kids in Kindergarten to 6th grade are invited to register for a 15-minute session with one of our non-judgmental listeners. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. at the Main Library. "The Night Watchman" Book Discussion

Dr. James Postema, Concordia College English professor, will lead a discussion of the The Night Watchman. Dr. Postema specializes in teaching Native American Literature. He will lead a discussion of the real-life contexts surrounding this semi-fictional work.

The Muskrat and the Long Knives: Understanding 1940s–1960s U.S.-Indigenous Relations as Portrayed in Louise Erdrich's "The Night Watchman"

A presentation by Dr. Erik Gooding, anthropology professor at MSUM, will describe and put into context the U.S.-Indigenous relations during the period of termination from the 1940s to the 1960s. Special attention will focus on the U.S.-Ojibwe situation as presented in Louise Erdrich's novel The Night Watchman.

This event will be held in the City Commission Chambers at Fargo's City Hall and streamed live on the library's Facebook page.

This event is part of the 2022 One Book, One Community reading project.
