Mayoral Proclamation - Homeless Persons Memorial Day - 12.21.2017

I Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim December 21, 2017, to be Homeless Persons' Memorial Day

  • WHEREAS, Adequate housing is essential for healthy families and communities and the winter season poses real hardship for inadequately housed men, women and children; and

  • WHEREAS, The spirit of the holiday season provides an opportunity for affirmation and renewal regarding the commitment to end homelessness; and

  • WHEREAS, Between January 2009 and November 2017 more than 150 persons have died while homeless in the Fargo-Moorhead area; their homeless status contributing to the abbreviation of their lives; and

  • WHEREAS, December 21st – the first day of winter and the longest night of the year – has been designated National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day by the National Coalition for the Homeless and is so recognized by cities and states across the country including those in the Fargo-Moorhead area; and

  • WHEREAS, In this season of generosity and sharing, Fargo citizens are encouraged to commit themselves to promoting compassion and concern for all, especially those who are poor and homeless; and

  • WHEREAS, It is important that we keep the cause of ending homelessness a priority and commit to doing our part to help our fellow citizens in need.

  • NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim December 21, 2017, to be Homeless Persons' Memorial Day in the City of Fargo.

  • IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Fargo, North Dakota to be affixed this 1st day of December, 2017.
