WHEREAS, Jake Laber, the son of Ken and Deb Laber, attended Washington Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary, Ben Franklin Junior High and Fargo North Senior High; and
-
WHEREAS, Jake was a stellar athlete at Fargo North and for the Fargo Post 2 American Legion program before moving on to pitch for the Bison of North Dakota State University (NDSU) from 2005 to 2008; and
-
WHEREAS, at NDSU, Jake was a two-time selection to the Division I independent all-academic team and College Baseball Foundation National Honor Roll; and
-
WHEREAS, Jake had a successful seven-year career in professional baseball, most notably with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Laber ended his RedHawks career in 2014 as the franchise leader in games started, innings pitched and strikeouts; and
-
WHEREAS, Jake most recently worked as an auditor at Noridian Healthcare Solutions and assisted the North Dakota Tourism Division in its campaigns to promote our state across the nation; and
-
WHEREAS, Jake unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2016, just five days before he was to marry his fiancée, Karisa Gullickson; and
-
WHEREAS, Jake was an intelligent, caring, strong and talented man who inspired countless young baseball players across the region and was beloved by our community;

WHEREAS, Jake represented the number 19 admirably throughout his many years of baseball and will be sorely missed by his thousands of fans.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That I, Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim Friday, August 19, 2016, to be Jake Laber Day in the City of Fargo, North Dakota.
