WHEREAS, June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and the Alzheimer’s Association would like to ask for support in raising awareness of Alzheimer’s; and
-
WHEREAS, Simply by having a brain, every person in your community is at risk for developing Alzheimer’s, a fatal disease that cannot be prevented, treated or even slowed; and
-
WHEREAS, Worldwide, there are at least 44 million people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias and without a change, these numbers are expected to grow to 76 million by 2030; and
-
WHEREAS, 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's: An estimated 5.2 million people are age 65 and older and approximately 200,000 individuals are under age 65 (younger-onset Alzheimer's); and
-
WHEREAS, Only 45% of people with Alzheimer’s disease or their caregivers report being told of their diagnosis, while more than 90% of people with the four most common types of cancer have been told of their diagnosis; and
-
WHEREAS, In 2015, 15.9 million family and friends provided 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer's and other dementias and that care had an estimated economic value of $221.3 billion; and
-
WHEREAS, The Longest Day event is to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association and held annually on the summer solstice. The duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease, and their caregivers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That I, Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2017, to be National Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Day in the City of Fargo, North Dakota.
