The Fargo Arts and Culture Commission is helping to sponsor a floating Canoe Parade on September 24 at 2 p.m. on the Red River near Dike East Park. The event, created by Folkways Event Organizer Simone Wai, strives to create a positive relationship between the Red River and its neighbors.

The Canoe Parade will consist of canoes and their paddlers, both decorated and in costume, navigating down the river and competing for the chance to win the golden paddle for the best-dressed vessel. Canoe floats will be creatively decorated with original float designs and themes curated entirely from the imaginations of their creators.

The parade will aid in cultivating a culture of outdoor recreation along the river and its trails, while fostering a love for the Red River. Spectators also play an important role in the event by creating an environment of excitement and revelry. Spectating is free of charge and does not require a canoe, removing the barrier to enjoyment for residents of all ages and canoe-owning status. Suggested viewing areas in Fargo include Dike East Park and River Trails on 13th Avenue South. In Moorhead, Heritage Park is another suggested viewing area.

The parade will conclude with a celebration and award ceremony at 3 p.m. where spectators can get an up-close viewing of the canoes, speak to their creators and hear the announcement of the grand prizewinner who will receive the annual Golden Paddle.
