Parenting Program Supporting Post-Deployment Military Families with School-Aged Children

Date: March 22, 2018

Time: 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Location: 1401 Administration Ave, Fargo, ND 58105 Get Directions

This year’s presentation is entitled, “Strengthening Families of Those Who Serve: Results of the After Deployment, Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT) Study.”

Deployment to war is a significant stressor not only for service members, but for their spouses/partners and children. Indeed, data from the past decade show that a parent's deployment is a risk factor for emotional and behavioral problems among children of all ages, as well as for spouses and, of course, service members themselves. Dr. Gewirtz will present data from her program of research on deployment and military families in general, and, in particular, the results of a randomized effectiveness trial of a parenting program - ADAPT - to support post-deployment military families with school aged children. Data will be presented on the program, its impact on parenting, parental mental health, and children's adjustment over time, and challenges and opportunities associated with implementing evidence-based family programs in military settings.

Dr. Abigail Gewirtz, Ph.D., is the Lindahl Leadership Professor, Dept. of Family Social Science & Institute of Child Development, & Director, Institute of Translational Research in Children's Mental Health, University of Minnesota. She is also Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Psychology, and presents nationally and internationally on children, stress, trauma, resilience, and prevention science.

A reception with treats and beverages will follow the presentation in the Butte Lounge of the Memorial Union at NDSU. For further information, contact Sean Brotherson at 701.231.6143.
